Background Information Concerning The
Panacryl Sutures Lawsuit
Name: Panacryl Sutures

FDA Approved: 1999
Recall Date: March 27th, 2006
Manufacturer: Ethicon Inc. (A Johnson & Johnson Company)
Used For: Sutures commonly used in the soft tissue of the abdomen.
What Are Panacryl Sutures?
Panacryl Sutures are a type of suture, or stitch. These sutures were typically used during lower abdomen surgeries and were intended to hold for roughly six months then dissolve.
What Made Panacryl Sutures Different?
Although Panacryl Sutures were marketed by Ethicon Inc. as having the same chemical composition as other dissolving sutures, Panacryl sutures were composed of a different chemical structure. This difference prevents the sutures from dissolving and causes other serious problems.
When Were Panacryl Sutures Recalled?
Panacryl Sutures were recalled March 27th 2006 because of the continued problems they presented. Over one million suture types were recalled from the market at this time. For a complete list visit our
Resource page.

What Are Common Problems With Panacryl Sutures?
Problems found with the use of Panacryl Sutures include:
- Infection
- Failure of suture absorption
- Suture Splitting
- Suture Granulomas (Raised bumps under the skin caused by scar tissue forming around the suture)
- Tunneling (Small holes, or tunnels, forming around the incision area)

Why Wasn't This Information Discovered Sooner?
It is now becoming known that a high ranking medical official who worked for the Ethicon company did express concern regarding Panacryl Sutures. He claims that his voiced concerns went unheard, resulting in serious complications for thousands of people. This employee has since been fired from the corporation.
Will My Doctor Contact Me?
Unfortunately it is uncommon for doctors to contact patients who had Panacryl Sutures used during recent or past surgeries. While some of the Panacryl Suture side effects are obvious immediately following surgery, many patients did not report problems for years after surgery. If you have had surgery from 1999 to 2006 and are experiencing any surgery complications or unusual feelings you should immediately contact a medical professional.
